Chapel Hill Creamery - Chapel Hill, NC
Portia McKnight and Flo Hawley began the Chapel Hill Creamery in 2001 in the Piedmont region of North Carolina. With over 20 years experience in the food-retail industry, they decided to follow their shared passion of cheesemaking- start to finish. This began with milk from their very own herd of Jersey cows. They chose Jerseys over Holsteins, the traditional dairy cow, because Jerseys produce a creamy, rich milk. The Chapel Hill Creamery makes about 6 kinds of cheeses including Carolina Moon(Camembert), Fresh Mozzarella, Dairyland Farmer’s cheese, Pheta (feta), Hickory Grove a raw-milk, aged cheese (Monastery style), and Calvander, an Asiago inspired aged cheese.
Goat Lady Dairy - Climax, NC
In 1995, Ginnie Tate, aka 'the Goat Lady', her brother Steve and his wife Lee opened Goat Lady Dairy in the lovely rolling hills of northeast Randolph County in the North Carolina Piedmont. They started with an abandoned worn-out tobacco farm and a 200-year-old log house and outbuildings, restored them carefully and then added a new dairy barn complete with milking parlor, goat loafing barn, dining room and a licensed cheese making room. From the beginning, their dream was to connect urban neighbors with the land and goats through hand crafted cheese and farm events. They had a message to share: when you know your food, your farmer and your cheese-maker you make choices that care for the land and change the world for the better.
